Why Affirmations, Mantras, Etc Work (And Why They Don’t)

If you’ve been around me for any length of time, you know I’m a big fan of Wallace Wattles and his books on success, especially “The Science of Getting Rich”
While not a book on affirmations or mantras, there has been many affirmations built around its teachings.
The point I want to pull from the book today is emphasized in this quote.

“There is a Science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic. There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches; once these laws are learned and obeyed by any man or woman, he or she will get rich with mathematical certainty.”
– Wallace D. Wattles

And that is that there is a system or “science” to success and goal achievement.
There are specific steps that have to be taken in order for your mantra or affirmation to go to work for you.
Step one is that you need to stay in a very specific belief or intention.

Being vague will never get you what you but it does need to be a genuine want or desire.
You won’t always believe you can receive it at first.

That’s ok.

The purpose of affirmations is to change those beliefs so you naturally see yourself as someone who is deserving and open to receive the things you want.

You may have heard me tell the story about making your order to ask for what you want how we delay its arrival.
If not, you can read that story, here;

Step #2 Is repetition.

No matter if it was learning to walk, mastering algebra or learning to be successful, it takes repetition.

With so many things to distract us, it’s easy to think that if you gave it a “good try” and kept focused for a few minutes over a day or two you have done what you need to do.

But if you don’t give the new belief the time and repetition it needs to become YOUR belief, one that is natural and internalized, then it remains an intellectual exercise.

In other words, it stays in your head as a good idea, but never becomes a reality.

You become disappointed and conclude that this self-development crap doesn’t work.

Well, it doesn’t, by itself.

It needs YOU to put it to work!

Write down what you want EVERY DAY.
Twice a day is even better.

Remind yourself of your dream, everywhere you look.

Create visual reminders of your dream and put them everywhere!

This could be a vision board, a dream box, sticky notes, lipstick on the mirror… anything that will keep what you are going after top of mind.

See yourself as having already achieved it.

This can be tough because you are so steeped in the reality of what’s in your environment now that it’s hard to imagine you are already living the dream.

But the mind is powerful and the brain does not distinguish “real” from imagined.
So, skipping this step is a big mistake.

Visualizing what you want as already done will let your mind know it’s here and will get to work on bringing it to you.

Find ways to add what you want to your world, even before it arrives.
In that same vein of thought, be ready to acknowledge how some of what you want, has already arrived.
